Hardware
Considerations
In terms of hardware for traders the old
adage applies - You get what you pay for!
Today's
high end software analysis tools, such as MetaStock and OmniTrader, require significant
computing power. Your old 486 with 16MB of RAM will definitely not cut it any more!
They will also require a minimum of Windows 98 operating system. Some programs require
Windows 2000 or higher. The absolute minimum specifications for your hardware to run this software
should be in the order of:
- Pentium III (or greater)
- 256 MB Ram
- 15 GB Hard Disk
- 17" Monitor CRT (seriously consider Flat Panel LCDs,
15" or greater)
- 56KB Modem
Comments
Again, these are minimum specifications. In terms of buying a new machine today, the
minimum CPU chip that you can probably buy is a Pentium III 600 MHZ. Also, the preferred
RAM is 64MB. For the operating system, Windows 2000 is desirable, being more stable.
Windows 2000 will require
higher specifications for hardware than Windows 95 or 98.
In terms of Video cards, you would be well rewarded in buying a dual monitor card, as sold
by Appian
or
Maxtrox.
These cards will allow you to watch your charts on one screen, whilst at the same time,
bringing up your brokers web site to make an order, or to watch CNBC via the video
interface.
